Workshop Series
America’s small businesses are the engine of our economy. They create two out of three net new private sector jobs. And, today, half of all working Americans either own or work for a small business. By embracing an inclusive vision of entrepreneurship, one that draws entrepreneurs from all communities, from all demographics and from all backgrounds, we will grow our economy, create good jobs and make Oakland a strong community.
Join us for a full day of training, networking and opportunities to learn about the power of diversity and inclusion in Oakland’s small business community. Each panel will present Oakland entrepreneurs and experts who will share their experiences, provide advice and share ideas on how our City can further embrace small business diversity.

Minority Businesses: A Force Fueling Small-Business Growth
Oakland City Hall, Hearing Room #1
The United States is on the fast track to becoming a “majority minority” nation. According to U.S. Census projections, the tipping point will come in 2044, when more than half of the U.S. population will be composed of Latino, Asian and African-Americans. In 2014, California became the first large state without a white plurality. The Latino population is now the largest race or ethnic group at 39 percent of California’s population; Asians are the third largest race or ethnic group at 13 percent; and African Americans are the fourth largest race or ethnic group in California at 5.7 percent in2015. Minority entrepreneurs are the greatest force shaping the U.S. small-business landscape today. In Oakland, there are many minority owned small businesses serving Oakland neighborhoods. Come and hear about the success and challenges of minority-owned businesses in Oakland from a diverse panel of Oakland business owners.
