The City of Oakland will mark National Small Business Week (April 29-May 5) with an an exciting week of community events and over 80 educational workshops for Oakland small businesses. The 2018 Small Business Week theme is “Helping Oakland’s Diverse Business Community Thrive.”
Entrepreneurs and business owners may choose from sessions at Oakland City Hall or join one of the eight neighborhood workshops in Chinatown, Dimond, Elmhurst, Fruitvale, Havenscourt, Rockridge, Downtown, and West Oakland. Topics include: tools for startups, financial planning, marketing, retail and restaurant opportunities, social media, access to capital, lease negotiating, international trade, merchandising, business operations, arts organizational planning, public/private sector contracting, human resource guidelines, strategic networking, tax law, and the makers economy.
In addition to the educational sessions, with various partners, we will host the following small business celebrations:
- Sunday, April 29: A reception honoring six Oakland’s family-owned, legacy businesses
- Tuesday, May 1: Oakland City Council honors nine local small business owners
- Wednesday, May 2: Oakland Multi-Cultural Chambers’ Members of the Year Awards Reception
- Friday, May 4: Oakland First Fridays street festival with Kiva Oakland vendors
